The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

This is a full time, ongoing role and can be based in our Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, or Hobart offices working a hybrid arrangement.

About the Role

An exciting new role in our Communications and Media team, the Manager, Media and Digital is responsible for building the profile, and protecting the reputation of, Ahpra and the National Boards. Reporting directly to the National Manager, Communications and Media, you are responsible for delivering Ahpra and the National Boards’ media strategy, driving proactive media opportunities while managing risk. You also manage a cross-disciplinary team of communications specialists responsible for Ahpra’s internal and external channels, such as publications, media, social media, videos and websites.

  • enjoys storytelling and is passionate about the role of media in communicating public safety messages
  • has excellent judgement and can provide measured, fearless, and frank advice
  • is experienced in media engagement, with good networks 
  • is an excellent writer and critical thinker 
  • can examine an issue and know how it will be interpreted by the media
  • knows that stories can be told across many channels 
  • is flexible and collaborative in their working style
  • has outstanding interpersonal skills and stakeholder management; allowing you to influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and
  • understand the importance of risk, and have the knowledge, skills and confidence to address events as they arise. 

Skills and experience 

The skills and experience you will bring to the role:  

  • proven ability to generate media opportunities and mitigate risk within a stakeholder-rich environment
  • knows how to structure and target media releases, crafting op-eds pitching stories and working with journalists
  • excellent writing style and expertise in high-impact messaging to key audiences
  • demonstrated experience managing complex and diverse relationships
  • demonstrated past experience managing a team
  • experience in new/evolving media channels and platforms
  • relevant degree level tertiary qualifications in media, communications, PR or a related discipline
  • minimum 10 years’ experience working in communications or media, publishing or corporate affairs.
  • Previous experience in working in health, regulation or other government sectors (desirable)
