The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications, and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

The Senior Policy and Project Officer, reporting to the Senior Policy Manager, plays a key role in supporting the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and its Committees in their regulatory functions. Working as part of a team led by the Executive Officer, Nursing and Midwifery, the role focuses on researching, developing, and refining policies, standards, and guidelines relating to the regulation of registered nurses, enrolled nurses and midwives.

Multiple full-time opportunities are available, including:

  • two permanent and
  • one fixed term (12mth) with opportunity to include a midwifery policy portfolio,

with applications open to candidates in any city with an Ahpra office location.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with the Senior Policy Manager, Nursing and Midwifery and broader Nursing & Midwifery team to achieve the NMBA regulatory plan.
  • Lead and support policy development, review, and evaluation using a risk-based approach.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure comprehensive consultation and input, gather data, and assess the impact of policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Conduct research to support the National Board’s policy and professional decisions, and provide timely, accurate advice on new policies, standards, or guidelines.
  • Represent the work of the NMBA in working groups, committees, and conferences, including presenting when needed
  • Provide secretariat support by preparing papers, agendas, and meeting materials for NMBA, subcommittees, and working groups, including documenting decisions and actions, and ensuring follow-through.
  • Coordinate reports, correspondence, and submissions to ensure timely and effective meeting outcomes.
  • Foster a positive team culture within the nursing and midwifery team while aligning with Ahpra’s values of Respect, Integrity, Collaboration, and Achievement.

As the ideal candidate, you will demonstrate the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of expertise 
  • Considerable experience in the development of health policy advice, ideally relating to health practitioner regulation.
  • Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills, preferably with experience working in a regulatory environment.
  • Sophisticated written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound understanding of project management methodology.
  • Experience working as a nurse or midwife or working within the health system /sector
