The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health practitioners. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications, and knowledge to provide safe care are registered and are practising safely.

As the Research Officer within the Research, Evaluation and Insights Team, (REIT) you will play a key role in supporting a high-performing research team through the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of research projects relating to recommendations from the Independent Review of Overseas Health Practitioner Regulatory Settings (the Kruk Review).

The Research Officer will support a review of the English language skills requirements for internationally qualified health practitioners applying for registration in Australia and optimisation of associated standards.  This involves exploring alternative options for how applicants may meet these requirements, thereby improving the public’s access to health services.

This is a full time, fixed term (until July 2025 with possible extension) role, located in any Ahpra location

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Work to develop a contemporary evidence base to support optimised language standard setting
  • Interrogate administrative databases to identify and explore factors associated with risks to the public
  • Apply sound research methodology, data collection, data analysis, interpretation and dissemination of research results
  • Have either quantitative research skills, such as the design and collection of data to answer research questions, or qualitative research skills, including design and practical undertaking of interviews and focus groups
  • Conduct statistical and thematic analyses
  • Conduct literature/scoping reviews/systematic reviews using robust research methods.
  • Prepare research ethics proposals, meeting papers, presentations, reports and publications as required.

You will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • A relevant qualification in public health, statistics, data science, or a degree with a strong focus on research methods and data analysis, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • Experience as either a quantitative or qualitative researcher.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to translate technical communication concisely for diverse audiences such as boards and executive management.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to enable open information sharing within a team
  • Experience in working with language standard setting is desirable
