The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this newly created role will establish and lead Ahpra’s board governance function, designing and embedding best practice across the Board, its committees, and the Executive team.

The Company Secretary will play a pivotal role in advising senior leaders on governance, legal obligations, and emerging risks, while overseeing board operations, records, and regulatory alignment. They will develop and oversee governance mechanisms that are evidence-based, compliant, and transparent. This role is responsible for lifting capability, designing processes, and driving continuous improvement across governance systems.

Ahpra is a national organisation with its head office in Melbourne. While the location of the role is flexible, regular travel to Melbourne would be required if based interstate.

About you

You are strategic, decisive, and ready to lead in a complex, reform-driven environment. You bring deep governance expertise, legal insight, and a passion for building systems that uphold integrity and accountability.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law, Business, Governance, or a related discipline.
  • Holds (or is eligible for) graduate membership with the Governance Institute of Australia or the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
  • Demonstrated experience as a senior Company Secretary in governance, legal compliance, or board management within a corporate, government, or not-for-profit setting.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply regulatory frameworks, statutory obligations, and corporate governance principles.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and enhancing governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to improve organisational effectiveness.
  • Track record of building trust and fostering collaborative relationships across multidisciplinary teams, senior executives, and board members.
  • Leads with integrity, clarity, and strategic purpose, especially in complex or high-stakes environments.
